Christmas Ideas to Help You Be Happy and Healthy in 2013

Saturday, November 24, 2012

With Christmas rapidly approaching, I have put together a simple list of things you should ask for if you are working towards a happier, healthier life.  Most are very affordable and east to find.  What else are you asking for this Christmas?

Top 10 (in no particular order)
1   Workplay Bags Fleetfoot II and Goddess II bags – Get out the door and hit the pavement running while being organized too.  Consider this investment pieces that you will use every day.  Trust me on this!

2.  Gymboss timer- perfect for interval training  and Tabata workouts

3.      Reusable water bottle- This will help you monitor your daily water intake while reducing the amount of plastic you use.  This one is from lululemon athletica.  :)

4.       Jump/skipping rope- This is easy to pack and everyone from the kids to granny can use it.  Your heart rate will quickly rise as you compete to see who can skip the longest.

5.       Gratitude journal- Sometimes we forget what we should be thankful for.  Take a few minutes every evening to remind yourself.  I also log my workouts to remind me how far I have come on my fitness journey

6.       Motivation cards- Take some time to research motivational quote and images and put together a stockpile of sayings that will get you moving when you just feel like staying home.  I have a few hanging on my bedroom mirror and office door.  There are some in my shop if you are pressed for time.

7.       Measuring cups and spoons (or a scale in the UK)- Monitoring your caloric intake is the best way to stay slim or loose weight.  Pay attention to serving sizes and stick to them!  You can also try smaller bowls and plates.

8.       New running shoes- When was the last time you bought new running shoes?  If your body hurts after running, if your shoes show signs of wear and tear, it is time to buy a new pair.  Find a specialty running shop that videos you running and will help you find the best pair for you.  Only wear the shoes for running and change them out after 400 miles.

9.       Lakeland Store and Save food containers-  OK, you might not need this specific brand but invest in Tupperware that doesn't leak.  I never have to worry about my salad dressing spilling all over my bag.  Bringing lunch with you saves you time, money, and calories. Don't get the cheap stuff and risk it.  Invest in your health!

10.   Merino wool- I am always cold.  I live in my merino wool socks on the winter and you can always find me in merino wool base layers.  They are lightweight but sooooo warm!  I even tested an Icebreaker workout tee in merino.  It keeps the smell down and helps with temperature control.  It will soon become your favorite workout tee even though it is a bit pricey.  BUT it is worth every penny.

Big things in the works!

Quickie Workout #36 - Tabata

Sunday, November 11, 2012

Remember to go for QUALITY over quantity. If you are unclear what the exercise is I am describing, please look for a video or arrange for an in-person tutorial with me.

Please consult your doctor before engaging on any fitness regime.

Don't forget to breathe! Please email me if you want tips on how to make the quickies easier or more challenging (mollie@ptmollie.com).

You will need a timer for this Tabata workout.  If you have a smart phone, look for an interval time app.

8 cycles of 20 seconds of alternating forward lunges with 10 sec of rest = 4 min

8 cycles of 20 seconds of press ups with 10 sec of rest = 4 min

8 cycles of 20 seconds of prisoner squats with 10 sec of rest = 4 min
    * prisoner squat engages the core because fingertips are kept by ears.  Squat down and jump up out of squat.

4 cycles of 20 sec of crunches with 10 sec rest, followed by 20 sec reverse curl with 10 sec rest = 4 min

Simply Swede Soup

Wednesday, November 7, 2012

On a recent trip to Ikea, my husband and I picked up a fantastic soup book that offers ideas with vegetables in season.  It is called A Soup for Every Day by the New Covent Garden Food Company.  Every recipe looks delicious, tells you how long the prep time is, and how many servings the recipe makes.  Remember most soups freeze well and can be stored in the freezer for a busy day. Enjoy the suggestion for today- Simply Swede (aka rutabaga)!

Ingredients
1 swede, diced
1 tablespoon honey
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 small onion, diced
1 teaspoon thyme, chopped
5 tablespoons double dream
775 ml chicken stock
1 teaspoon pumpkin oil

Directions (1 hour 10 min prep time, serves 4)
1.  Preheat oven to 170 degrees C/325 degrees F/gas mark 3.

2.  Toss the swede in the honey and 2 tablespoons of olive oil.

3.  Season to taste and roast in oven for 1 hour.

4.  Heat the remaining olive oil in a pan.

5.  Add onion and thyme, then cook gently for 5 minutes until soft and brown.

6.  Add the roasted swede, cream, and chicken stock.

7.  Bring to a boil.

8.  Blend until smooth.

9.  Season to taste, add pumpkin oil, and serve.

Weekend Challenge: Measure out your snacks

Friday, November 2, 2012

Last weekend, you were challenged to learn how to read food labels. This weekend, empower yourself with this knowledge by measuring out your snacks. Rather than munching on chips, crackers or carrots straight from the bag, take a look at the nutrition label. Put the appropriate amount into a small dish (small dishes and plates make the portions look bigger) or a Ziploc bag. Enjoy knowing how many calories, grams of protein, and percent fat you are consuming!

Big thanks to Mommy and 4 Peas in a Pod for the image.

Like to row? Join a worldwide event!

Thursday, November 1, 2012

On the 9th  and 10th November  London Youth Rowing (a charity based in East London which provides open access to rowing at all levels) will be coordinating a 24 hour GLOBAL indoor rowing event.

How this will work is that 2 groups of people (one in London and one in South Africa) will be doing the whole thing but we would like people from all over the world to join in for as long as they can and contribute their metres to the global total.

There are two ways to participate:

1.  Either you can join in on one of the 24 hour long sessions which have been set up on the RowPro online system or

2.  You can do the metres in the comfort of your own gym/club/garden and send us the details.

We have a website where you can register your interest and where you are!

Hope you can join us!  This will be the Weekend Challenge for 9-10 November. :)
